This is a selection of hand drawn maps I have completed during walks through the forest. From Limerick take the N69 coast road west heading towards Foynes. Pass through Kildimo village and continue on to Kilcornan. Turn left just leaving Kilcornan and follow this road for 3.5 kms to reach the Forest Park. It is signposted from the main road (N69).
Curragh Chase is Located in Kilcornan Co. Limerick The park is 22km west of Limerick on the N69 on the coast road.
Curraghchase House was built in 1657 by Vere Hunt, an officer in Cromwell's army, and remained the home of the De Vere family for over 300 years. The existing house dates from the eighteenth century. Hunt was granted the land, during the Cromwellian plantations. John Fitzgerald originally owned the land. At this time, the estate was called Curragh meaning Bog. When one of John Hunt's descendants, Aubrey Hunt, changed his surname by Royal License to de Vere in 1833, he also changed the name of the property from Curragh to Curraghchase. Aubrey De Vere married Mary Spring Rice and they had a family of eight. The famous son Aubrey Thomas de Vere who became a poet and author, was born at Curragh Chase in 1814. Aubrey died in 1902 having lived most of his life at Curragh Chase. Curragh Chase was acquired in 1957 by the Forestry Division and in the 1970s was established as a forest park. The park is over 313 hectares of mixed woodland, park land and lakes which together provide a rich habitat for a diverse range of animals and plants. Coillte is currently involved in restoring the native woodlands. |
